CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Thinking about buying a home for the first-time,
but don't think you can afford one? What if you were offered $72,000? And you don't have to pay it back?
That's
just what Chesterfield County is
offering first-time homebuyers. The money will go towards a down payment for
a brand-new, "top-of-the-line" home.
It's the first-time Chesterfield County has teamed up to offer
a major incentive to first-time buyers. There are talks that the home grant may return in the future, so as they say, get
it while it's hot. $72,300 for first-time homebuyers sounds too good to be true.
"Our biggest challenge
is getting people to believe that this is real," said Smitty Smith, Southside
Community Development.
Especially when you then learn that $72,000 is the minimum you can receive.
"There
is no catch. Chesterfield County is trying to promote affordable home ownership
in the county," Smith said.
It's the first-time the grant money has been available in the county. And right
now, it can only be used on homes inside the Hamlin Creek Community. The homes come with energy-saving features.
"To
qualify you have to be at least a first-time homebuyer and that's anyone that has not owned or sold a home within the
past three years and you have to meet the income guidelines," he said.
If you qualify you get this grant money
and can take advantage of this year's federal tax credit,
$8,000 that doesn't have to be paid back to Uncle Sam.
"If you take a home like these that are listed for
$237,000, guess what, you only need to qualify at $165,000 to buy a brand new home in the county," Smith said.
But
here's the deal: count on this deal being here today - sold tomorrow.
"There are five opportunities in
Chesterfield County and there are actually three opportunities left. We have two homes under contract already," said
Smith.
If you want to see the three floor plans that are left, stop by the Hamblin Creek Community off of Route
2-88 at South Chester Road this Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to
1:30 pm.(c) 2009. WWBT, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
